Adorable and fearless, Jade had an ideal childhood, two loving parents and a passion for horses that led her to competitive show jumping. Jade’s world came crashing down around her when, at 10, her father’s increasing depression led to her parents’ divorce and her father’s attempted suicide. Left on her own while her father fell deeper into depression and her mother attempted to rebuild her life, Jade felt abandoned and turned to drugs and alcohol for comfort. Now, at 24, Jade has a severe addiction to prescription opioids and cocaine and suffers from intense suicidal ideations. She has overdosed three times in the past year. Her family are desperately afraid that she will not see her next birthday without a successful intervention.

Abbie was a young mom with dreams of going to college for photography. But she was hiding a dark secret from her family. Her boyfriend, and father of her daughter, had become physically and mentally abusive. The beatings escalated, and Abbie ended up in surgery after a punch to the face shattered bones and required three metal plates. Abbie began drinking excessively to cope with the abuse. Though she finally pressed charges after he threw boiling soup on her, Abbie is now a fullblown alcoholic. Her parents are raising her daughter while Abbie lives nearby with a new boyfriend who enables her addiction. Her alcoholism has gotten so bad that Abbie already has chronic liver, kidney, and bone marrow damage. Without help, Abbie’s family fears that her daughter will lose her mom for good.

Fish is still good for us, though. Observational studies , which estimate how much fish people eat and their incidence of heart disease, consistently find that eating fish at least once per week is associated with a lower risk of dying of coronary heart disease.

But these studies can only show correlations, not a direct causal link between eating fish and better heart health, and they can’t tell us if omega-3 capsules have the same effect as fish in the diet. Maybe fish are good for us because they contain not just omega-3s but also other nutrients, like vitamin D, iodine, selenium, and protein. If you’re eating a salmon fillet instead of a steak, you’re also consuming many more polyunsaturated and fewer saturated fats.

The Truth Comes Out

To find out if omega-3 supplements really make our hearts healthier, we needed clinical trials. Many such studies have been done over the last few decades, and the best of these were summarized in the recent JAMA Cardiology study . A meta-analysis, the study pooled the results of 10 randomized trials, altogether involving nearly 78,000 people at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Some of the participants took omega-3 supplements and some did not. On average, the trials tracked people for about four and a half years and together recorded 6,273 cardiovascular events, including heart attacks, strokes, and procedures like coronary bypasses and angioplasties. A few of the 10 trials had found benefits of omega-3s, but when all were combined, that larger pool of data showed no decrease in cardiovascular events in people who took the supplements.

Another large study published by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2016 came to the same conclusion.

The Bottom Line: Take Fish Oil If You Really Want, But Don’t Expect Much

The Elizabeth and James Animal Print RoundToe Loafers outlet manchester great sale outlet best prices clearance outlet store U8f1R8Xl8d
says that despite the mixed evidence, it’s still reasonable to take an omega-3 supplement if you’ve had a recent coronary heart disease event, like a heart attack, or if you have heart failure, but there’s no evidence that they should be used in the general population. There’s also little risk (beyond the cost) of taking omega-3s in the doses commonly used, usually containing about one gram of fish oil.

The authors of the recent study also point out that early research on fish oil and heart disease did show a benefit, and the disappointing results of more recent studies could be because of changes in diet and medicine over time. For example, maybe omega-3 supplements only benefit heart health if you’re truly deficient in omega-3s, and as early studies were covered in the media, more people started eating fish so that a supplement didn’t add any further benefit. Or maybe, as we’ve gotten better at managing heart disease through the use of medications, like statins, any benefit of omega-3s is no longer apparent.

First, building your next product, service or campaign around tolerance and celebration of difference will earn you criticism – even hate – as well as love. If you don’t want to weather the storm, don’t drive into it. Our take? Short-term, you may lose some customers. Long-term, this truth is a solid foundation on which to build a brand. Do it because it’s right – and know you have the future on your side.

Second, in 2016, millions in the US, Europe and elsewhere moved against a more open, connected, and yes, tolerant world. What’s more, for them decades of rising exposure to difference and diversity did not cause them to embrace tolerance. Indeed, in some cases it seemed to actively exacerbate prejudice.

The takeaway? A more open and connected world will only reliably increase tolerant attitudes when people feel that the benefits are being shared fairly. The last three decades of globalization left millions behind, materially and culturally. Anger grew. ‘The other’ became a target for that anger.

Brands must play a role in that. You can’t advance tolerance with in tolerance. Taking easy shots – like this UK makeup brand that says it won’t sell products to Trump supporters – won’t help.

So yes, right now there are millions (the majority?) around the world who don’t prioritise tolerance. We’re NOT saying you should ignore them! Quite the opposite: it’s only by listening to their legitimate concerns – while still always challenging toxic views – that we’ll build a sustainably tolerant world.

This truth feels:

Five things worth knowing this week

Many Masks . A week or so ago, we put a call out to VAIS supporting artists to help raise money for this wonderful program . . . by making masks we could sellat our September Art Auction and Gala (theme: Masquerade).

Many Masks

Well, Patty Gregorich’s Drama class has taken the Many Masks projects to a whole new level, with each student creating three, four, five or even more masks for VCA’s auction guests to wear this September. These McMurray students have used a creative array of materials for masks ranging from sophisticated to playful to spirited. Now there really is no reason to not have something fabulous to wear for this wonderful event. The kids will be there to model and sell their masks. This will be fun.

United by a randomly generated theme, each group offers a unique spectrum of viewpoints on our contemporary condition. Seven writers, seven directors, musicians, designers, and dozens of actors test their craft and their courage as they race the clock to bring Vashon audiences the freshest plays of the day.
